Multi-Age
Children do not only learn from adults. They learn constantly from one another. Multi-Age classes bring children at different developmental stages together in the same classroom, creating opportunities to observe, imitate, lead, help, negotiate, and form relationships across ages.
Because our Multi-Age offerings serve different age ranges and family needs, each class develops its own rhythm and character while sharing the same foundation: learning through play, relationships, and community.

Children's Program
Mixed-age classrooms create a kind of learning that cannot be replicated when every child is the same age. Younger children have opportunities to watch more experienced peers, try new skills, and imagine what comes next. Older children gain confidence as helpers, leaders, and role models.
Through play in small and large groups, children practice communication, collaboration, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and conflict negotiation with peers whose abilities and perspectives may be different from their own.
Teachers create environments with enough flexibility and variety for children at different developmental stages to participate meaningfully. The same classroom experience might invite one child to observe, another to experiment, and another to take the lead.
The goal is not for every child to be doing the same thing. It is to create a community where children can learn from one another while growing at their own pace.

What Class Looks like
Each class follows a predictable rhythm designed to help children feel secure, engaged, and ready to learn through play.
Open-Ended Play
Children choose from experiences that can be approached in different ways depending on their age, interests, and developmental stage.
Learning Across Ages
Younger children observe and imitate older peers, while older children practice leadership, patience, empathy, and helping.
Movement & Exploration
Children have opportunities to move, investigate, create, build, pretend, and engage their whole bodies in learning.
Social Problem-Solving
Mixed-age play creates real opportunities to negotiate ideas, communicate needs, resolve conflicts, and learn how to participate in a group.
Community Time
Shared experiences such as stories, music, conversation, and group activities help children and adults build relationships across the classroom.

Support for Parents & Caregivers
One adult from each family enrolls through South Seattle College as part of the co-op program.
Multi-Age co-op gives adults a rare opportunity to see development unfolding across a wider range of ages.
Instead of seeing only children at exactly the same stage as their own, families can watch how skills emerge and change over time. That perspective can make it easier to understand where a child is now, what may come next, and just how differently children can develop.
South Seattle College parent educators provide opportunities for families to ask questions, share experiences, and learn about child development, behavior, relationships, and family life.
Families also become part of a community that spans different stages of parenting, creating opportunities to learn not only from educators but from one another.
How Families Participate
Co-op works because families are active participants in the classroom and the community.
In Multi-Age, your family's participation includes:
Family participation is an important part of every Multi-Age class, but the details vary by offering.
Depending on the class, adults may:
Attend and participate alongside their child in the classroom.
Work as classroom assistants alongside the children’s teacher.
Take part in parent-education or parenting-support discussions.
Help with shared responsibilities that support the class community.
Access additional parent education, resources, and community events through the co-op program.

Participation can be shared. Grandparents, nannies, aunties, uncles, and other important adults in your child's life are welcome to take part and help your family fulfill its co-op commitments.
Cost & Financial Support
We are committed to making our programs accessible to as many families as possible.
Registration & Tuition
Registration fees are charged annually. Monthly tuition varies by class and location; current tuition is shown with each class above.
Financial Assistance
Tuition assistance is available through SSC Cooperative Preschools scholarship funds. Families can apply for support throughout the school year.
